Our Experience...

Working in the private sector as therapists we were aware that these young people coming to see us, were not only there because their parents, and/or teachers were worried about them and their behaviour, but they actually wanted things to change and happy to seek help if it was in the right environment. This is important to remember because it means that if we could facilitate this, we would have voluntary and engaging young minds seeking change. A consistent theme that we found prevalent was the feelings of fear, anxiety, frustration, anger and sadness that so many youngsters, parents and teachers experienced on a daily basis.  It soon became apparent to us that from the vast variety of reasons that could be the cause behind these feelings, time and time again, the majority of these feeling were borne out of; not feeling heard or seen, and sometimes feeling that they didn’t matter.

Lessons Learned...

For our organisation there was an important lesson to be learned from these young people, it reinforced that we are all guilty of not listening, and sadly on a day to day basis. As the quote below aptly points out, we all ask each other those questions many many times a day and not just in words but deeds. This is also reflected in all the latest reports and statistics from different organisations such as Stem4 and the Childrens Society through extensive research programmes and their similar observations on the disconnect that exists.

We know we have the tools and expertise required to make a difference and to transform this worsening situation. The way we can do this is by joining hands and collaborating. Working together as a team with the young; with schools; with parents and other recognised agencies and charities; creating a linked and connected community. Collaboration is key to our vision and we cannot make the transformation without the help of teachers and parents. Our aim Is to make the programme readily available to schools by offering coaching in private settings away from schools, to the young and their parents. We also plan to launch a series of much needed community projects entirely initiated by our young trainees and involve teachers and parents using social media to promote and project their success stories and accomplishments.

At ‘Conquering Life Academy’, we take the view that, as the statistics demonstrate, change is vital in every aspect of our lives, our value systems, our thinking, and with it our aspirations and goals.

Learning to listen...

We can all learn to listen, have an opinion and feel valued but it takes time and effort and the willingness to want change on our part. Clearly the young clients that we have had the pleasure of working with showed us from their attendance that this is what they wanted. Maybe it’s time we started to listen again.

We know that with the right kind of coaching parents will be happier, our young and their teachers will be happier and so will we.

Our Academy Coaches...

Our coaches are highly trained, fully qualified and carry enhanced DBS checks.

As well as conforming to all statutory regulations in working with young adults, we expect all our coaches and mentors to keep up to date with ‘Continuing Professional Development’. This is to the process of tracking and documenting the skills, knowledge and experience that coaches and mentors gain both formally and informally as they work, beyond any initial training.

A record of what they experience, learn and then apply, on a never ending journey of growth and improvement.
